Rachelle and 8 year old son's thoughts: This book is a hit! I read this aloud to my son and he loved staring at the cover while I was reading. From the very first pages, he was hooked, especially because he said that Trevor sounded a lot like Dan Cahill from the 39 Clues series. We loved the mystery in this book, the way each character was introduced with something mysterious, the way that the Castleton's seemed to have a lot of secrets, and the incredible twists and turns of the Adventure Machine! There's an excellent mix of everything we love in this book--surprise, suspense, humor, wit, action, adventure...it's just awesome on every level. Frank Cole is a master at building suspense and action and sprinkling humor in with the story. We thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and now my son is looking up more to read--can't wait!

Havencross Book Review

Today I'm happy to share my review of a new book by Julie Daines, Havencross. If that cover doesn't catch your eye and pull you in, then read on, because this is a book you don't want to miss!

Havencross by [Daines, Julie]

Rachelle's Thoughts: I absolutely loved this book! The writing was incredible with the setting so real, I felt like I'd been pulled back in time to Cornwall, England. The main character, Elaine has essentially been banished from London society because of a scandal with her father. I found it interesting how each person dealt with their new place in Cornwall after being gone for so long. I loved how Elaine connected with her surroundings, while at the same time wishing herself back in London. The developing romance with Gareth was well-done surrounded by several different mystery aspects. I love a great mystery and even though this novel is a regency romance, the mystery intertwined in the story is strong enough to delight mystery readers as well.
And of course, who wouldn't love the references to King Arthur of old as Elaine walked through the ruins of what might have been his castle. The little hint of magic around King Arthur and Gwenevere added another layer to the story that kept me reading. I look forward to reading more by Julie Daines.

More about the book:
When a shocking scandal involving her father spreads through London society, Elaine Cardinham and her parents are forced to retreat to their country home in Cornwall for refuge. But Havencross is no sanctuary for Elaine. She is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of her brother—and the heartbreak she left in her wake all those years ago. It has been five long years since Gareth Kemp last saw Elaine—when she rejected his marriage proposal. Her reappearance convinces him of one thing: he has never stopped loving her. To put his feelings for her aside, he focuses his attention on the dangerous smuggling plaguing the Cornish coast. As Elaine attempts to run from her past, she ventures ever closer to a dangerous truth—and Gareth may be the only one who can save her from a deadly finish.

New Book & Giveaway, Searching for Irene by Marlene Bateman

I'm happy to take part in a blog tour for a new mystery novel, Searching for Irene by Marlene Bateman. I love a good mystery and this one is sure to please, especially since the publisher is giving away 2 copies to you--my readers! *One autographed paperback and one ebook! Keep reading for details on how to enter the giveaway!

Rachelle's Thoughts: I enjoyed this good, clean mystery set in the 1920s. It was interesting to see a different time period. I loved the setting of the modern-day castle! Bateman did an excellent job of dropping numerous bread crumbs, continually leading the reader off the trail of the killer. The main character, Anna, has quite the secret and stumbles upon several clues in her search for Irene. At times, Anna was a bit frustrating with her indecision and flip-flopping back and forth on who she could trust or fall for romantically. Bateman created a page-turner where I wanted to reach in and tell Anna what to do! I enjoyed the many facets of the mystery and would recommend to anyone needing to get their mystery fix.

About the book:
What happened to Irene?

When Anna Coughlin, a modern 1920’s woman, travels to the secluded hills of Virginia to work for wealthy Lawrence Richardson, she discovers that the previous secretary, Irene, mysteriously disappeared a few weeks before. Upon arriving at the castle-like mansion to begin working, Anna finds that Lawrence’s handsome, but antagonistic son, Tyler, wants nothing more than to have her gone. And he isn’t the only one—

After Anna sets out to find the truth behind Irene’s disappearance, a series of frightening incidents ensnare her in a maze of intrigue. Anna is helped—and often hindered—by the temperamental Tyler Richardson, who—despite her best intentions—begins to steal her heart.

But even as Anna begins to uncover dark secrets in a troubled household, she must continue to hide a significant one of her own. When her life is threatened, Anna is left to wonder if she’ll be able to unravel the mystery before she disappears as mysteriously as the unfortunate Irene—

Excerpt; Searching for Irene

The tallest parts of the mansion—fanciful turrets and a circular tower—were visible only in glimpses Anna caught between lofty oaks and towering pines as her cab wound through the knolls and hills of eastern Virginia.

When the cab turned up the long driveway lined with dogwood trees in full bloom, Anna Coughlin reached for her handbag, gripping it with a tension that had knotted her muscles ever since getting on the train.

The vast estate stood on a hilltop, like a castle—and she craned her neck to better view the starkly impressive gray-stone mansion of Ashton Hall—where she hoped to be hired. With its arched, leaded windows and slate roof with numerous chimneys, the house rivaled pictures she’d seen of castles in Europe.

Instructing the driver to wait, she climbed out, patted her hat in case it was askew, then smoothed her gray suit with gloved hands in hopes of presenting a professional appearance. Anna had no confidence she was clever enough or bold enough to pull this off, but she had to try.

Her eye was drawn by a tall man—more than six feet—who came from the side of the house. Since the man was striding toward her so purposefully, Anna stopped and waited. As he drew near, Anna noted his deep-set eyes were as black as his hair. His skin was tanned, his thin, long-fingered hands brown and strong.

“Miss Coughlin?” He stretched out a hand and shook hers, but there was no warmth for her in his eyes. “I’m Tyler Richardson. Unfortunately, your services are not needed after all.” A touch of arrogance marked his manner, as though he was long accustomed to command those around him.

“Your father called only last week to have someone come out,” Anna blurted in dismay. “May I ask what caused him to change his mind?”

A fleeting glimpse of discomfiture crossed Mr. Richardson’s face. “I wasn’t consulted about his hiring another secretary to replace the one who left so suddenly. My father isn’t in good health, and the last thing we need is someone coming in and upsetting him by making a muddle of things.”

His words kindled a fire that glinted in Anna’s eyes. How dare he make such an assumption? It was difficult to hang on to her temper, but there was too much at stake to let his boorishness sidetrack her. “Since I’m here, I’m sure you won’t mind if I keep my appointment. After all, your father is the one who requested my services. I’m sure he’s expecting me.”

Her words hit home.It took a few bitter seconds, but he finally acquiesced. “Come in, then,” he muttered ungraciously before leading the way up the steps and opening the door.

Following his rigid back down the narrow hall, Anna’s brows furrowed as doubts crept in. How wise had she been to come to this remote place? Especially when the previous secretary had disappeared so mysteriously? Even her employer thought it odd that no one in this mansion seemed to know where Irene had gone or where she was now. It was as if Irene had vanished into thin air.

New Book from Sarah Eden, Romancing Daphne with giveaway!

Summertime and books are synonymous for me. If I could, I would sneak away and read all day--that's what my kids, especially the teenagers like to do!
I'm lucky enough to be part of the blog tour for Sarah M. Eden's latest book, Romancing Daphne.

Rachelle's Thoughts: This is an excellent read, as expected for any of Sarah Eden's novels. I absolutely loved reading more about the Lancaster family in this sister novel to the many English sisters named after Greek Myth characters. This is the story of Daphne Lancaster, the timid, quiet sister who has so much more going on her beautiful mind than others suspect. Her character is one of contrasts from the expected or perceived and the reality and James Tilburn's character is the same, although in a very different point of conflict. There are definitely villains in this book, very well written and easy to dislike, which makes it all the more enjoyable to root for Daphne and James! One of my favorite things about Eden's writing style is the wit and charm that she effortlessly weaves into a compelling romantic tale that is wholesome and clean. I laughed out loud in several places as I read and read every second I could grab to reach the satisfying conclusion. I love happy endings!

More about the book:
As her first London Season looms before her, the thought of the impending social whirl fills Daphne Lancaster's timid heart with dread. She hasn't her sisters' beauty nor their talent for conversing easily. Even her family's enviable connections may not be enough to prevent disaster.
But Daphne's misery turns to surprised delight when the first even of her Season brings an unexpected visitor to her door—James Tilburn, whose tender kindness stole her heart in her youth. When the handsome young gentleman expresses his desire to court her, Daphne is elated. Their feelings for each other quickly grow, and it appears that, much to Daphne's disbelief, her happily ever after is within reach.
Yet nothing is as it seems. The couple finds themselves caught in a tangled web of greed and deceit, leaving James and Daphne to determine whether they are willing to risk everything for true love.

Need a Great Rom Com for Summer? Read Wrong for You by Jenny Proctor

If you are gearing up for summer and counting down the days until carpool/school/schedules ends, then I'm with ya! And those times call for an upbeat clean romance with a dash of humor AKA Wrong for You. I absolutely loved reading this new book by Jenny Proctor!
Wrong for You by [Proctor, Jenny]
Rachelle's Thoughts: This was the first book that I've ever read by Jenny Proctor and I was so impressed that I immediately bought another one to read next, which I will tell you about! I loved the witty voice of Lane and her relationship with her Grandma in this book. The scene where we first meet the Hamilton brothers is all kinds of fun and had me immediately invested in the story. This book is fun, light, clean, and humorous, yet it has depth at the same time--a hard feat to pull off in a rom com. I admired Lane's qualities and those of the Hamilton brothers as well. Which one of the brothers was my favorite? You'll have to read the book to see who Lane chooses because I agree with her heart!
About the book:
Lane Bishop is a hardworking, intelligent, beautiful young woman. And with her recent move to Chapel Hill, she is determined to leave behind the drama and effort of keeping up with the dating scene. Even so, Lane somehow manages to get dragged out by a gaggle of girls to go watch boys play soccer. Just watching is not Lane’s forte, so she joins in the fun and leads her team to victory.
Rather than feeling intimidated by the vivacious beauty on the opposing team, Jamie Hamilton is intrigued. Risking his “untouchable” dating status, he decides to pursue Lane—with a little help from his older brother Simon. With Simon’s behind-the-scenes assistance, Jamie proves irresistible, even to a disillusioned dater like Lane. But as she gets to know both brothers, Lane can’t help but wonder—beneath the grand gestures and romantic words, is she falling for the wrong guy?

New Proper Romance, The Vicar's Daughter by Josi Kilpack

I'm so excited to take part in the blog tour of a new proper romance novel!
New from Best-selling author Josi S. Kilpack and the Proper Romance Line, The Vicar’s Daughter is a delightful twist on the classic tale of Cyrano De Bergerac. Follow the complicated courtship process in Regency England as sisters Cassie and Lenora both vie for the attention of the same man.

Rachelle's thoughts: I LOVED this book! I loved the character of Cassie--her vibrant personality that got her into so much trouble when she was only trying to help her very shy sister Lenora to find a husband in Evan. The twist right at the beginning of the story is that Cassie starts to fall in love with Evan. I love Evan's character as well and it was fun to read from his perspective as he tried to figure out the stark differences between "Lenora's letters" and her real temperament in person.
I read this book quickly because I couldn't wait to get to the happy ending. I really enjoyed the setting of this book in the countryside away from London. It's still Regency England but the courtship process was slightly more relaxed. I also enjoyed the family that Kilpack created with Cassie having five sisters and Evan having two sisters as well. I hope there are more stories to be told from this little village! I think this is one of my favorite from the proper romance line. If you decide to read it, beware, you might fall in love with the characters too!
Cassie, the youngest of six daughters in the Wilton family, is bold, bright, and ready to enter society. There’s only one problem: her older sister Lenora, whose extreme shyness prevents her from attending many social events. Lenora is now entering her third season, and since their father has decreed that only one Wilton girl can be out at a time, Cassie has no choice except to wait her turn.
Evan Glenside, a soft-spoken, East London clerk, has just been named his great-uncle’s heir and, though he is eager to learn all that will be required of him, he struggles to feel accepted in a new town and in his new position.
A chance meeting between Evan and Lenora promises to change everything, but when Lenora proves too shy to pursue the relationship, Cassie begins to write Mr. Glenside letters in the name of her sister. Her good intentions lead to disaster when Cassie realizes she is falling in love with Evan. But then Evan begins to court Lenora, thinking she is the author of the letters.
As secrets are revealed, the hearts of Cassie, Evan, and Lenora are tested. Will the final letter sent by the vicar’s daughter be able to reunite the sisters as well as unite Evan with his true love?

I received a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Want to read a great hunting romantic supsense? Check out The Woman With No Name by Kelly Nelson

You know I'm a sucker for a great romantic suspense, so I had to tell you about Kelly Nelson's novel, The Woman With No Name.

The Woman with No Name by [Nelson, Kelly]Losing her memory might lead to finding happily ever after.

Rachelle's Review: This is an excellent clean read that was fast-paced and set in an interesting area of Utah. I like the way the book started out with tension increasing throughout each chapter. Reading through both the viewpoints of Skye and Colton add to the romantic tension in the story. About midpoint, the story lagged a little bit when Skye and Colton figure out who she really is. I think this was mostly because I was completely impatient with her horribly self-absorbed fiance and I wanted to get back to the heart of the story. There is a ton of hunting detail so if you're a fan of hunting, this story will resonate with you. Overall, a fun, light read that will leave you smiling with the perfect conclusion.

More about the book:
Sworn bachelor Colton Murdock gets more than he bargained for on the elk hunt when he finds an injured woman in Utah’s high country. She must have a history, but she wakes up to towering pines and the clap of a thunderstorm with no recollection of her name or how she came to be there. Colt brings her to the safety of his camp, trying to ignore the first stirrings of his heart since the tragic death of his fiancée six years ago.

The young woman can’t help falling for her ruggedly handsome rescuer, who calls her Skye for her blue eyes. But her life goes into a tailspin when she is recognized as Lily Vanasche, fiancée of a popular TV news anchorman, and Colt is arrested for a series of crimes—including her abduction. After the real kidnapper leaves a death threat in Lily’s ransacked house, the clock starts ticking. Can she remember her past before it catches up with her?

This exciting romantic-suspense novel will appeal to readers who enjoy inspirational Christian fiction.

*I received a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion which I've shared.

Today I'm thrilled to be taking part in the blog tour for Brandon Mull's brand new book, Dragonwatch.

At the Christensen home, we're huge fans of Brandon Mull and his Fablehaven series. I'm currently reading the Fablehaven series to my eight-year-old son and this will mark the third time I've read it. I read the entire series once myself, then part of it to my daughters, and now to the next kid in line. He absolutely loves the books and is so excited to be able to take AR tests at school on the "big books" we're reading.
Dragons were a very exciting part of Fablehaven so when we discovered that Mull was writing a sequel to the Fablehaven series featuring Dragons, there was all kinds of excitement!
Mull's writing style is excellent because his characters are well-developed and the descriptions of the many different creatures, including dragons, in the book create a picture in the mind like a movie. Mull also uses tons of vocabulary or BIG words that challenge the readers to expand their word lists. I've enjoyed reading to my kids because they'll often ask what a word means and then we can explain it. Other times, I know that they've learned a new word just from the context of the sentence.
The storyline is often intense and the kids never want me to stop reading.
If you're looking for a great book and an excellent series to dive into with your family or just for your own reading pleasure, you won't want to miss Dragonwatch and the entire Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull.

Here's more about the book:
In the long-awaited sequel to Fablehaven, the dragons who have been kept at the dragon sanctuaries no longer consider them safe havens, but prisons and they want their freedom. The dragons are no longer our allies....
In the hidden dragon sanctuary of Wyrmroost, Celebrant the Just, King of the Dragons, plots his revenge. He has long seen the sanctuaries as prisons, and he wants nothing more than to overthrow his captors and return the world to the Age of Dragons, when he and his kind ruled and reigned without borders. The time has come to break free and reclaim his power.
No one person is capable of stopping Celebrant and his dragon horde. It will take the ancient order of Dragonwatch to gather again if there is any chance of saving the world from destruction. In ancient times, Dragonwatch was a group of wizards, enchantresses, dragon slayers, and others who originally confined the majority of dragons into sanctuaries. But nearly all of the original Dragonwatch members are gone, and so the wizard Agad reaches out to Grandpa Sorenson for help.
As Kendra and Seth confront this new danger, they must draw upon all their skills, talents, and knowledge as only they have the ability to function together as a powerful dragon tamer. Together they must battle against forces with superior supernatural powers and breathtaking magical abilities.
How will the epic dragon showdown end? Will dragons overthrow humans and change the world as we know it?

There's an amazing new video trailer too. Watch it here:

Deadly Inheritance, a New Book Spotlight by Clair M. Poulson

I've been reading Clair Poulson novels for over ten years. He writes great mysteries, often with characters who are members of the LDS or Mormon church. His novels are clean, gripping, and entertaining.

His latest novel Deadly Inheritance looks interesting...take a peek.
Deadly Inheritance by [Poulson, Clair M.]

Andi Buckner and her twin brother, Bolden, have had enough of the rough streets of Detroit. When they can no longer bear the drugs and abuse within their home, the twins make their escape: Bolden to the military, and Andy to wherever the wind takes her. With few belongings and no specific destination, Andi eventually finds herself across the table from a kind old man in a quaint café in Spring Hollow, Montana. Louis “Gramps” Granger, a retired cop, takes Andi under his wing. Andi soon finds a peace she’s never known as she roots herself in the small town, working at the café and living in a cabin on Gramp’s property. But her peace is short-lived. . . When an enemy from Gramp’s past murders the old man, Andi’s need to see justice served draws her into an investigation far beyond her own abilities. But hundreds of miles away, her twin brother senses her despair and heeds her silent plea for help. Andi is soon reunited with her brother as well as with Bolden’s friend, private investigator Mason Crowther. Together, the trio delves into a mystery and soon discovers that the murderer’s motive goes far deeper than any of them imagined. With the truth almost within reach, they find themselves directly in the path of a killer who will stop at nothing to finish what they’ve started. . . .

Want to Change Your Eating for the Better? Check out the Recipe Hacker Confidential

I have loved cooking ever since I was a little girl. At the time, I remember my mom saying that she hated cooking and I couldn't imagine it. She said, "Wait, until you have a family and you'll understand."
I understand now. As a mother of five little kids, it feels like all I do is fix stuff to eat, which then makes a mess, we clean up, and then start over. Luckily, my amazing husband likes to do dishes, or else I would've given up a long time ago. But I digress, I'm here to share a new cookbook with you today called The Recipe Hacker Confidential by Diana Keuilian.

I reviewed Diana's first Recipe Hacker cookbook here and I learned a lot from it. My family is dairy-free and some of us are also gluten-free so I treasure cookbooks like these which have taught me how to adapt pretty much any recipe I'd like to make for my family.
In her new book, Diana delves even deeper into how to prepare healthy recipes. I love Diana's insight and creative tips, such as the Lazy Man's Double Broiler--genius!
I'm lucky enough now to have a daughter who loves to cook, so one of the first recipes she tried was the vanilla pudding. That's something we never have because of dairy, so my kids thought it was a real treat! And I can share that these recipes are easy enough that an eleven-year-old can have success on the first try.
My cookbook is marked up with all the recipes we want to make and I'm feeling very encouraged about the positive approach to food that Diana teaches. This cookbook is a must for anyone with food allergies and for those who'd like to eat healthier and lose weight.
I received a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Here's more about this delicious cookbook:
